Gray B. Broughton
Gray Broughton focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense and commercial litigation. In addition, Mr. Broughton has experience handling immigration matters and defending product liability claims. As a part of his white collar criminal practice, Mr. Broughton regularly defends clients in felony cases in both state and federal court. Mr. Broughton also assists businesses and individuals subpoenaed or under investigation by state and federal agencies, with particular experience representing health care companies and professionals as well as government contractors.

In addition, Mr. Broughton has experience handling immigration matters and defending product liability claims. As a part of his white collar criminal practice, Mr. Broughton regularly defends clients in felony cases in both state and federal court. Mr. Broughton also assists businesses and individuals subpoenaed or under investigation by state and federal agencies, with particular experience representing health care companies and professionals as well as government contractors.
Mr. Broughton has extensive trial and motions practice experience, having tried dozens of jury trials to verdict. Mr. Broughton recently represented a publicly-traded company in a four-day arbitration against a former regional manager for misappropriating trade secrets and violating non-compete and non-solicitation agreements. Mr. Broughton also represented an individual charged with racketeering conspiracy and other RICO violations in federal district court.
Much of Mr. Broughton’s work, however, takes place before charges are filed. Mr. Broughton recently conducted an internal investigation and advised a government contractor regarding a concurrent federal investigation into allegations of False Claims Act violations, bribery and illegal gratuities. Mr. Broughton also served as lead counsel for a national health care company under investigation for health care fraud following execution of a search warrant and seizure of its records by federal agents.
Before joining Williams Mullen in 2006, Mr. Broughton served for over four years as an attorney in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, leaving the service as a captain. During his time in the JAG Corps, Mr. Broughton prosecuted numerous felony cases as lead prosecutor for the Greater Heidelberg, Germany area and was responsible for advising commanders and training junior prosecutors. Mr. Broughton was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for service during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Mr. Broughton has been named to Virginia Business magazine’s list of “The Legal Elite” and is recognized as a top civil litigation and criminal defense attorney by Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Stars magazine. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and the Fourth Circuit. He is a member of the Virginia Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section Council and the John Marshall Inn of Court. Mr. Broughton’s involvement in the local community includes serving as local chapter president for the Alumni Association of Davidson College and as a member of the President’s Council for the Richmond Sports Backers.
Mr. Broughton earned his bachelor of arts degree from Davidson College in 1998 and his law degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law in 2001.
