For over 30 years, Mr. Scifres has represented local, regional and national regulated and non-regulated lenders in a variety of financing and enforcement transactions. His experience encompasses the origination, documentation, restructuring and enforcement of commercial, real estate and asset-based loans, syndicated financings, financings of tax credit projects, issuance and credit enhancement of tax-exempt bonds, securitization financings, UCC Article 9 issues, lender liability issues, loan workouts, bankruptcy, real and personal property foreclosures, consumer credit issues and loan participations. He has specific experience in financing for real estate development, hospitality, government contracting, media and automobile dealer companies. He regularly represents creditors in debt restructurings, workouts and bankruptcies, and clients in asset acquisitions from bankrupt companies. Mr. Scifres also has extensive experience representing developers of apartment, hotel and headquarters projects, including acquisitions, sales, construction, financing and franchise license transactions.
Mr. Scifres is general counsel and a member of the board of directors of the Tidewater Builders Association, Inc. He is a past chair, and serves as a member of the executive committee and board of directors, of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the board of directors and the executive committee of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce, the Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance and the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance. He is the president of the Hampton Roads chapter of The Risk Management Association and a member of the Hampton Roads Association of Commercial Real Estate, and has been active in various other community organizations.
A graduate of the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Mr. Scifres received his law degree with honors from the Michigan State University College of Law, where he was editor-in-chief of the Law Review. He earned his master of law and taxation degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, College of William & Mary. Following law school he served as a law clerk to the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.
