Advancing Medical Success Through Service
Helping patients and the families battling ALS in the U.S. gain access to IPLEX was very rewarding.”
As a doctor of pharmacology and an intellectual property attorney, Dr. Kelly Hollowell’s contributions to the field of science and medicine are vast. Her legal practice, which is centered on patent law and licensing, focuses on the cross hairs of law and life sciences. Her Ph.D. work centered on development of the central nervous system and related cancers. She also served three years on the Virginia General Assembly Joint Sub-Committee for the Study of Stem Cell Research. Presently, she has been asked to join the board of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, in part because she is also a strong advocate for patients’ groups. Most recently, Kelly advocated on behalf of an ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, group for the release of a drug called IPLEX. After numerous tests in Europe, IPLEX was shown to help ALS patients with their symptoms. Against all odds, Kelly successfully led the pro bono effort which resulted in the pharmaceutical company signing a letter of intent that allowed the drug to be distributed in the U.S. IPLEX is now being used across the country in clinical trials.
Kelly continues to be an advocate for the ALS and M.S. communities. She will continue to be an advocate until a cure for these degenerative diseases are found.
