Jonathan R. Bumgarner
Jonathan Bumgarner concentrates his practice on commercial litigation. Mr. Bumgarner represents our clients on a variety of matters, including contract disputes, franchise litigation, unfair trade practices, tort claims, and intellectual property and technology. Mr. Bumgarner is a member of the firm's eDiscovery team. He also works with the firm’s Labor & Employment Section in litigation involving discrimination claims, and employment contracts, including covenants not to compete. Mr. Bumgarner routinely represents individuals as well as corporate clients ranging from small businesses and midsized corporations to large Fortune 500 companies.

Mr. Bumgarner is licensed to practice in North Carolina and is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Federal Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Litigation Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, the Wake County Bar Association, the Tenth Judicial District Bar, and the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, where he serves as a member of the Young Lawyers Committee Executive Board. Mr. Bumgarner is admitted to practice before all federal and state courts of North Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Mr. Bumgarner is an active member of the Young Leaders Society of United Way of the Greater Triangle and volunteers with the Capital Area Teen Court.
Prior to joining Williams Mullen, Mr. Bumgarner served as a law clerk to the Honorable Frank W. Bullock, Jr., U.S. District Judge (Ret.), in the Middle District of North Carolina. As a federal judicial law clerk, Mr. Bumgarner advised the court on employment discrimination and disability claims arising under Title VII, the ADA and the ADEA. Jonathan also assisted the court in resolving federal tort claims, insurance coverage disputes and criminal cases, including white-collar crimes and frauds. Our clients benefit from Mr. Bumgarner’s extensive knowledge of federal practice and procedure and his first-hand experience as a member of the federal judiciary.
Mr. Bumgarner earned his bachelor of arts degree from Campbell University, magna cum laude. He earned his law degree, cum laude, from Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, where he served as a staff member and business editor of the Campbell Law Review. As a law student, Mr. Bumgarner served as a law clerk to the Honorable J. Douglas McCullough at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and worked as an intern in the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
