09.16.2010 EPA Announces Regional Administrator For Region 4

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson announced recently President Obama’s selection of Gwen Keyes Fleming as Regional Administrator for EPA Region 4. Region 4 includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and 6 Tribal Nations.

Regional Administrators (“RA”) promote state and local environmental protection efforts and serve as liaison to state and local government officials. RAs are tasked with ensuring the Agency’s efforts to address environmental challenges are rooted in science-based policies and programs, adhere to the rule of law, and are transparent, according to EPA’s news release.

Ms. Keyes Fleming has more than 15 years experience as both a prosecutor and administrator. Most recently, she served as District Attorney in Georgia’s Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit which encompasses all of DeKalb County, Georgia. As District Attorney, Ms. Keyes Fleming managed more than 165 employees, handling 13,000 felony cases each year with an annual budget of more than $12 million. During her career, Ms. Keyes Fleming instituted several community outreach programs related to crime prevention on behalf of young women and children.

Ms. Keyes Fleming obtained her B.S. in Finance from Rutgers University and her law degree from Emory University School of Law. There was no mention in EPA’s news release of the environmental experience of Ms. Keyes Fleming.
