06.01.2011 Williams Mullen’s Chairman Emeritus Appointed to Richmond’s Economic Development Authority’s Board of Directors Julious P. (Joey) Smith, chairman emeritus of Williams Mullen, has been appointed to serve on the Richmond Economic Development Authority’s (EDA) board of directors by Richmond City Council. Smith was nominated for the position by The Honorable Bruce W. Tyler, Councilman, Richmond City Council, West End 1st District.

“I look forward to the depth and breadth of experience and expertise that Joey Smith will add to the EDA’s board of directors,” said Councilman Tyler. “The addition of his outstanding knowledge and proven leadership abilities will be a valuable asset and complement to this important board.

Established by Richmond City Council in 1972, the Richmond Economic Development Authority promotes and encourages companies and industries to remain or locate in Virginia and the City of Richmond. Richmond City Council appoints members to this board to help improve the quality of life and work in Richmond for its citizens and businesses.

“I have long admired the work of Richmond’s EDA and am pleased to pitch in to help further the economic well-being of Richmond and its citizens,” said Smith. “I’m delighted that Bruce and others believe that I have something to offer.”

Smith served as Williams Mullen’s chief executive officer for 26 years from 1984-2010. During his leadership, the firm grew from 25 lawyers located only in Richmond to more than 300 in 12 offices across North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. A native Richmonder, Smith has a long history of community involvement including serving on the boards of trustees at Hampden-Sydney College and the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges. He represented Virginia on the United States Olympic Committee and currently serves as chairman of the board of the Mutual Assurance Society of Virginia.
