07.01.2008 Williams Mullen Forms Attorneys of Color Initiative In keeping with the firm’s commitment to diversity, the Williams Mullen Diversity Committee is pleased to announce the formation of the Attorneys of Color (AoC) Initiative. This affinity group was formed in part to help enhance the sense of community among the attorneys of color and to provide resources to cultivate an environment that enables attorneys of color to thrive at Williams Mullen.

In July, our attorneys of color gathered in Richmond, Va. for a kick-off event that included comments from the firm’s chairman Julious P. Smith, Jr., Vice Chairman james V. Meath and Diversity Committee Chair Craig L. Mytelka, who each reaffirmed the firm’s commitment to diversity and support for the group. J. Conrad Garcia and Judy Lin Bristow, as members of the Diversity Committee will serve as chair and vice chair, respectively, of the AoC Initiative. Chair of the Diversity Committee, Craig L. Mytelka, commends Mr. Garcia and the attorneys of color for their extraordinary efforts in spearheading this initiative and feels that the group will accomplish much on a firmwide basis. He encourages all attorneys’ contributions and creative input to help make this a noteworthy endeavor.

Twenty-one years ago the first attorney of color joined Williams Mullen. Today, there are over 20 attorneys of color with the firm. “That we have increased our body of attorneys of color and now have an affinity group is significant and meaningful to the firm,” says Mr. Garcia. “The AoC Initiative looks forward to supporting the firm’s efforts to enhance workplace diversity through the recruitment, retention and promotion of attorneys of color.”
