Bill Anderson has over 35 years of experience in environmental law and focuses his practice on compliance/regulatory counseling, enforcement, permitting, and transactional matters. He has experience in the chemicals, refining, forest products, electrical products, waste management, automotive and other industrial sectors. He represents domestic, foreign and multinational corporations on regulatory compliance and transactional matters.
Bill Anderson has over 35 years of experience in environmental law and focuses his practice on compliance/regulatory counseling, enforcement, permitting, and transactional matters. He has experience in the chemicals, refining, forest products, electrical products, waste management, automotive and other industrial sectors. He represents domestic, foreign and multinational corporations on regulatory compliance and transactional matters. Bill regularly assists clients in the identification and management of environmental liabilities in relation to acquisitions, divestitures and financings, and he counsels them on the financial and securities implications of environmental issues.
Prior to joining Williams Mullen, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of a large international firm and the head of the environmental law practice at another Washington, D.C. firm. In these positions, he led a group that represented clients in a wide-range of environmental proceedings and served as national counsel to industrial concerns on matters involving the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, the Toxic Substances Control Act and Superfund.
Bill is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Maryland and is a liaison for the American Bar Association Section on Business Law to the ABA's Standing Committee on Environmental Law. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Law and The Best Lawyers in America© (1993-present), and he was named a Washington D.C. Super Lawyer for Environmental Law (2009-2015). Martindale-Hubbell rates him as an AV attorney, its highest rating available.
A frequent lecturer and published author on a variety of environmental law topics, Bill has spoken at continuing education courses for the Environmental Law Institute (“ELI”), ALI-ABA, several ABA sections and the ABA Standing Committee on Environmental Law.
He assists a number of nonprofit organizations through both his pro bono legal work and community service. He is a member of the board of the Bright Angel Foundation and a former board member and vice-chair of Ten Thousand Villages of Alexandria, Va. In addition, he serves as General Counsel for the Tropical Forest Foundation in its efforts to advance sustainable forest management in the world's tropical rainforests.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina in 1968, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University in 1973 and his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, also in 1973.
