During that time she managed employment law issues with both employees and independent contractors, developed and maintained contracts and litigated collections suits against businesses.

Ms. Cowart-Coughlan is admitted to practice in North Carolina. Prior to practicing law, she did environmental protection work for municipalities, private consulting firms, and the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Ms. Cowart-Coughlan is active with Meals on Wheels in New Hanover County, North Carolina. Ms. Cowart-Coughlan received her juris doctor degree from Campbell University where she was selected for the Campbell University National Trial team. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
