As Williams Mullen’s Director of Human Resources, Dena Wengert oversees the firm’s strategic HR initiatives and helps sustain an employee-oriented, high-performance culture. Over her 20-plus years of experience as an HR professional, Dena has been a consistent champion for organizational employee engagement and the importance of relationship-building in strengthening diversity and inclusion.  In 2015, she was named Richmond SHRM’s HR Strategist of the Year for her work in applied engagement strategy to “build culture, increase diversity of thought and connect all these elements to performance and rewards.” Since joining the firm in 2012, she has participated in applying for and receiving annual awards such as the Best Places to Work in Virginia by Virginia Business magazine; the Best Employers in North Carolina by Business North Carolina magazine; and the Richmond Times Dispatch’s “Top Workplaces.”

Dena also oversees policies and procedures, employee relations, compliance, payroll and benefits administration. For the past several years, she’s led successful benefits open-enrollment campaigns designed to promote awareness of consumer-driven healthcare choices and participation in corresponding firm benefits, resulting in significant bottom-line savings in health care spending. She led her benefits team in rebranding the “Finding Wellness” program with robust preventive and healthy lifestyle benefits.

As a member of the firm’s Retirement Plans Committee, Dena is committed to identifying relevant topics and interesting subject-matter experts to present investment and financial fitness education to targeted constituencies within the firm, and she has recently been focused on increasing awareness of Medicare and Social Security and how they apply to retirement-age working professionals.

Dena is originally from Pittsburgh and earned her B.S. in business management from The Pennsylvania State University. She holds her Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) and Society for Human Resources Management Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP™) certifications.  She is a member of the board of directors of Richmond SHRM as director of professional development & certification and a member of the board of directors of the Virginia Business Leadership Network (VABLN).  She is an active member of national SHRM, the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) and the Council of Human Resources Executives (CHRE).
