Gray Broughton focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense and commercial litigation. As co-chair of the White Collar and Investigations Team, Mr. Broughton assists businesses and individuals who have been subpoenaed, raided or under investigation by state and federal agencies.  Mr. Broughton has particular experience representing health care providers and government contractors.  Mr. Broughton regularly defends clients in felony cases in both state and federal court.

As co-chair of the White Collar and Investigations Team, Mr. Broughton assists businesses and individuals who have been subpoenaed, raided or under investigation by state and federal agencies.  Mr. Broughton has particular experience representing health care providers and government contractors.  Mr. Broughton regularly defends clients in felony cases in both state and federal court.

Mr. Broughton has extensive trial and motions practice experience, having tried dozens of jury trials to verdict. Mr. Broughton recently defended a businessman charged with multiple counts of tax fraud before a jury in federal district court.  Mr. Broughton also represented a publicly-traded company in a four-day arbitration against a former regional manager for misappropriating trade secrets and violating non-compete and non-solicitation agreements.

Much of Mr. Broughton’s work, however, takes place before charges are filed. Mr. Broughton recently conducted an internal investigation and advised a government contractor regarding a concurrent federal investigation into allegations of False Claims Act violations, bribery and illegal gratuities. Mr. Broughton also served as lead counsel for a national health care company under investigation for health care fraud following execution of search warrants and seizure of its records by federal agents.

Before joining Williams Mullen in 2006, Mr. Broughton served for over four years as an attorney in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, leaving the service as a captain. During his time in the JAG Corps, Mr. Broughton prosecuted numerous felony cases as lead prosecutor for the Greater Heidelberg, Germany area and was responsible for advising commanders and training junior prosecutors. Mr. Broughton was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for service during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mr. Broughton has been named to Virginia Business magazine’s list of “The Legal Elite” and is recognized as a "Rising Star" in Criminal Defense: White Collar by Virginia Super Lawyers magazine. In addition, he was selected one of Richmond’s 2012 “Top 40 Under 40” by Style Weekly for his professional accomplishments and service to the Richmond community.

Mr. Broughton is admitted to practice in Virginia and the Fourth Circuit. He is a member of the Virginia Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section. Mr. Broughton’s involvement in the local community includes serving as local chapter president for the Alumni Association of Davidson College and as a member of the President’s Council for the Richmond Sports Backers

  • At request of client's audit committee, Williams Mullen's Government and Corporate Investigations team conducted the internal investigation, provided advice regarding appropriate remedial and disciplinary actions, and assisted client in responding to various government regulators' requests for additional information.
  • Defended client in lengthy and contentious arbitrationunder the AAA of a stock award dispute.
