Turner A. Broughton
Turner Broughton focuses his practice on consumer class actions, health care litigation, and complex and general business litigation, including serving as national counsel on vendor disputes for two Fortune 500 companies. Mr. Broughton also has extensive experience in mass tort actions, with particular emphasis in asbestos and MTBE. In the course of his practice, Mr. Broughton has handled all aspects of civil litigation in state and federal courts from California to Florida, including written discovery, deposition of fact and expert witnesses, development of expert testimony, motions practice, trial practice (bench and jury) and appellate practice. In addition to litigation, Mr. Broughton's practice includes alternative dispute resolution. He has both arbitrated and mediated disputes successfully on a wide variety of matters.

Mr. Broughton is licensed to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia and the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Wisconsin. Mr. Broughton is the former chair of the Virginia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division and has served on the executive committee, executive council and as secretary/treasurer. Currently, Mr. Broughton is actively involved in DRI’s class action specialty law group, including serving as co-chair of membership for the specialty law group.
Mr. Broughton is a co-presenter of Recent Developments in Virginia Law, an annual Virginia CLE program. He has also written and lectured on class action issues for both the DRI and VBA. He has been recognized as one of Virginia’s “Legal Elite” by Virginia Business magazine, named one of the top up-and-coming lawyers in the state by Virginia Super Lawyers Rising Stars magazine, as well as being named a Future Litigation Star for Virginia by Benchmark: Litigation. Mr. Broughton is actively involved with the Richmond Sports Backers as a member of its board of directors.
Mr. Broughton received his bachelor of arts degree from the College of William and Mary. He received his juris doctor degree, cum laude, from the University of Richmond School of Law.
Representative Highlights
- Represented a Fortune 500 company in a multi-million dollar dispute regarding the termination of an exclusive supplier’s contract. Obtained an award in favor of the company following a multi-day arbitration
- Represented a Fortune 500 company in a multi-million dollar dispute regarding a coal supply contract. Obtained a $15 million judgment in favor of the company following the court’s decision to grant summary judgment in favor of the company
- Represented national retailer in multiple class actions, including defeating class certification of a nationwide class of consumers
- Represented developer and City of Richmond at trial regarding claims that the City had improperly granted the developer a special use permit in violation of the petitioner’s Due Process rights, among other causes of action. The court returned a verdict in favor of the developer
- Obtained dismissal of judicial officer on claim alleging misconduct in sale of property at auction
- Serve as national counsel for a manufacturer regarding disputes arising from contracts related to retailers’ sale of its products
- Tried UCC sale of goods matter on behalf of product distributor, which resulted in dismissal of claims against the distributor
- Represented the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network in multiple administrative proceedings with member institutions regarding compliance with UNOS and OPTN bylaws
- Represent manufacturer in business conspiracy/RICO matter
- Represented builder in arbitration where cause and origin of fire was at issue that destroyed multi-unit dwelling. The arbitrator returned an award in favor of the builder
- Represented multiple nursing homes and assisted living facilities in wrongful death and personal injury litigation. Obtained an award in favor of a nursing home in a multi-day wrongful death arbitration
