William A. Anderson, II

Bill Anderson has over 35 years of experience in environmental law and focuses his practice on compliance/regulatory counseling, enforcement, permitting, and transactional matters. He has experience in the chemicals, refining, forest products, electrical products, waste management, automotive and other industrial sectors. Mr. Anderson represents domestic, foreign and multinational corporations on regulatory compliance and transactional matters. He regularly assists clients in the identification and management of environmental liabilities in relation to acquisitions, divestitures and financings, and he counsels them on the financial and securities implications of environmental issues.

Prior to joining Williams Mullen, Mr. Anderson was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of a large international firm and the head of the environmental law practice at another Washington, D.C. firm. In these positions, Mr. Anderson and the group he led represented clients in a wide-range of environmental proceedings and served as national counsel to industrial concerns on matters involving the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, the Toxic Substances Control Act and Superfund.

Mr. Anderson is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland. He is a liaison for the American Bar Association Section on Business Law to the ABA's Standing Committee on Environmental Law. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Law and Best Lawyers in America and has been named a Washington DC Super Lawyer for Environmental Law. Martindale Hubbell rates Mr. Anderson as an AV attorney, its highest rating available.

A frequent lecturer and published author on a variety of environmental law topics, Mr. Anderson has spoken at continuing education courses for the Environmental Law Institute (“ELI”), ALI-ABA, several ABA sections and the ABA Standing Committee on Environmental Law.

Mr. Anderson assists a number of non-profit organizations through both his pro bono legal work and community service. He is a member of the board of the Bright Angel Foundation and a former board member and vice-chair of Ten Thousand Villages of Alexandria, Va. In addition, he serves as General Counsel for the Tropical Forest Foundation in its efforts to advance sustainable forest management in the world's tropical rainforests.

He earned his bachelor of arts degree from the University of North Carolina in 1968, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned a Master of Public Policy degree from Harvard University in 1973 and his juris doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, also in 1973.
