01.28.2009 Williams Mullen Attorneys Win Virginia Bar Association Awards RICHMOND, VA – Williams Mullen announces that Matthew E. Cheek and Travis G. Hill have received the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division’s most prestigious awards. Mr. Cheek received the Sandra P. Thompson Award which recognizes an individual annually for outstanding work and long-term service. Mr. Hill received the Emerson G. Spies Award for enthusiasm, loyalty and dedication to the Association

Mr. Cheek is a member of the firm’s financial services and real estate practice group. He has broad experience in a variety of transactional settings, including representing lenders and borrowers in loans secured by real property, owners and developers in the acquisition and sale of real property, property owners in land use and zoning cases, and others in general transactional and commercial matters. Mr. Cheek received his undergraduate degree, cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994.  He earned his law degree in 1999 from Washington & Lee University School of Law, where he was a member of the Moot Court Executive Board.

Mr. Hill is a member of the firm’s government relations practice group. He focuses his practice on handling legislative issues for not-for-profit entities, private foundations, associations and major corporate clients. He received his bachelor of arts degree with distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his juris doctor degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was the note and comment editor of the North Carolina Journal of International Law and Commercial Regulation.

The Sandra P. Thompson Award (formerly known as the Fellows Award) was established in 1979. Several attorneys from Williams Mullen have received this award in the past.

The Emerson G. Spies Award was founded in 1991 by the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyer’s Division. The first recipient of the award was Douglas M. Nabhan, a member of the Williams Mullen labor & employment practice.
